What is local number portability?
Local Number Portability or LNP, is an industry term used to represent the process of switching a phone number from 1 carrier to another carrier. For consumers, this allows a customer to keep their phone number. For example, a Digital Nomad moves from the United Kingdom to another country AND wants to keep their UK mobile number even when living abroad.
The solution? LNP!
What is the cost for Local Number Portability?
In most cases, there is no charge. Occasionally, the carrier that is “losing” the phone number will charge a fee. CallnFax does not charge a fee for Local Number Portability.
We do occasionally have carriers adding a fee when they lose a phone number, and it is usually around USD $25. CallnFax will notify you with a copy of your carrier’s invoice.
How long does it take?
Porting a phone number is usually quick, just a few days. The major carriers in the UK, USA, and Canada often will complete a LNP order in 2-3 days. Smaller markets may take 2-3 weeks. It is important to maintain service with the carrier until the process completes and is confirmed to be successful.
Will I miss any calls?
This is a very important questions, and the answer is no. CallnFax will set up your inbound call routing prior to the LNP being processed. That means once the losing carrier forwards the service, your calls will flow immediately. We understand the importance of your phone calls, and we work to ensure absolutely seamless service.

CallnFax requires:
- completion of our LNP form,
- a copy of your most recent phone bill, and
- a copy of your ID
During the porting process, we usually receive a porting date from the losing carrier ensuring a smooth changeover.
